What is the Difference Between an Interior Designer and a Decorator?

What is the difference between Interior Design and Interior Decorating? This question is often asked to me by clients. Many people use the terms “interior designer” and “interior decorator” interchangeably, but these professions are very different from the other. Today I will be discussing the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator. Interior design is the art and science of understanding people’s behavior to create functional spaces within a building. Decoration is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things. Interior designers apply creative and technical solutions within a structure that are functional, attractive and beneficial to the client. In other words, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design.

An interior designer creates interior living or work spaces to accommodate client’s needs or desires. Another very important fact about interior designing is that interior designers must adhere to code and regulatory requirements, encouraging environmental sustainability. An interior designer researches, analyzes and plans interior layouts to make them physically, socially and aesthetically functional. Modern technology and advanced computer programs allow interior designers to create virtual living areas before finalizing them for development or construction.

An interior decorator often paints walls, hangs wallpaper, selects and places furniture, installs window treatments, and adds accessories such as throw rugs, lamps, throw pillows and wall art to a room. An interior decorator doesn’t knock out walls or structurally change the layout of an interior space. An interior decorator often uses his/her skills to adorn a living space once an interior designer has made necessary structural or functional changes. I hope that after reading this blog you learn the difference between these two professions and choose to hire the appropriate professional for your needs.
